Asphalt pavements are highly susceptible to temperature changes. This weakness make asphalt pavements prone to crack, deform and decreases the service life. Not only huge public and private investment is needed to maintain the roads in a safe and operative shape, but also high consumption of natural resources.
We developed a new technology using aerogel to provide a solution to asphalt pavement temperature susceptibility challenges. Aerogel is treated with by-products of the petroleum-refinery system and blended with the asphalt mixture to provide thermal resistance. The implementation in the asphalt material optimizes the thermal storage and allows less heat flow within the pavement structure. This can reduce the thermal susceptibility of asphalt materials, improving their durability. This initial spark ignited a passion for creating a more resilient future. It led us to explore innovative materials and discover the remarkable potential of aerogel technology.
